Cologne, Germany, headquartered muli cycles has won the Best Cargo Bike Award at the 2025 edition of Cyclingworld Europe with the brands first Bosch motor equipped bike – the muli Motor eu.
The muli Motor eu is the newest member of the muli family – and comes equipped with a Bosch Mobility Performance Line CX motor, paired with the German-made 3X3 Gear Hubs & bike components gear hub.
As you’d expect for a cargo bike, the muli Motor eu is designed to deliver performance and durability.
What may be less obvious, at a glance, but is no less important – over 90% of all components are sourced from within the EU, with the frame made from recycled steel in the brand’s own Cologne-based, muli Factory – “using renewable energy, robotic welding and lots of human passion.”
The award-winning muli is a bike that’s about more than just specs. Here, the brand points out that as a business, its models are focused on:
- Building smarter.
- About rethinking production.
- Doing all that right here in Europe.
Engineering that starts with sustainability as the goal
What began as a feasibility study – “Is it possible to mass-produce a bicycle entirely in Europe?” – quickly evolved into a development project for a new and unique product: the muli Motor eu – a premium model that not only features quality, durable, components but also sources 90% of its parts from within the European Union.
Two years ago, it was that big question which effectively launched the “EU-muli” project, setting muli cycles course taking on a lengthy development process, as well as searching for locally made components and parts.
Encouragingly, the brand reports its project was met with open doors from many manufacturers, and piece by piece, the puzzle came together—sending a powerful message to the industry: “Responsible action means being courageous and leading the way”.
Transparency in choice making
The origin of these parts is transparently disclosed by the business, which points out that “only five of the final components are produced outside the EU—some for understandable reasons, such as the tyres and tubes from Schwalbe.”
While 100% EU production wasn’t achieved, the team at the muli factory in Cologne is confident they’ve developed a viable product that meets the highest standards of social and climate responsibility. With this fimly in mind, the business states, “the muli Motor eu is currently the most fair and sustainable cargo bike in the world.”
A catalyst for wider change
The “EU-muli” project doesn’t end with the launch of the muli Motor eu. Internally, the brand sees this as a guiding project for the future of the entire product family.
- Valuable insights have already been implemented as “running changes” in the series production of other models in the muli portfolio.
- Equivalent quality components are continuously being integrated, provided they meet higher environmental and social standards.
Here, muli cycles challenge itself to define, set, and achieve the highest sustainability standards – as a strong means for the company to send “valuable signals to the entire industry about responsible resource management and the importance of local production”.
