Continental has introduced what it is describing as the brand’s most aggressive, off-road capable, gravel tyre ever with the launch of the Terra Adventure.
The Terra Adventure – inspired by Continental’s highly successful cross-country mountain bike tyres – is made for “riders blurring the lines between gravel and cross-country MTB”. So far, so on-trend.
The brand points out that the new tyre aims to “deliver unparalleled performance across diverse terrains”. What you can take from this is a focus on creating a fast-rolling open tread pattern, designed to ensure performance on everything from soft ground to hardpack, and everything in between – “offering maximum grip with low rolling resistance”.
Terra Adventure is the fourth addition to the Continental Terra series, joining Terra Hardpack, Terra Speed, and Terra Trail – and as an MTB inspired tyre is “designed to balance rolling resistance and off-road performance, optimised for today’s gravel riding, as well as cross-country and down-country mountain biking”.
MTB influence on tread, sidewall protection, and tyre volume
MTB-inspired design features strong, angled, and slanted shoulder knobs “for enhanced cornering and off-camber grip”, whilst the brand points to its 3-3-4 Centre Stud design, which it says “optimises braking and transition performance”, while that open tread pattern “ensures fast rolling efficiency on mixed surfaces”. We’ll leave it to Guy Kesteven to tell you how that actually feels and performs out in the wild.
As we’d expect, Terra Adventure is available in current gravel tyre volumes with the 45mm wide casing reported to have “enhanced characteristics for off-road speed”, while the 55mm option is “more ideally suited to long-distance comfort and performance”. Still got tyre size questions? Unsure about tread patterns? Just ask Dylan Johnson (or, maybe, not).
Here, riders will make choices based on frame clearance – given UK gravel is often known, affectionately (or not), as ‘mud’ – and/or rockiness of trails, which leads nicely onto puncture protection.
Continental highlights that all options provide sidewall and centre reinforcement for puncture protection. The Terra Adventure also feature “state-of-the-art tubeless-ready technology and hookless compatibility”.
