After a successful launch in late 2024, UK-based helmet start-up Newlane is poised to become the first company in the world to integrate Mips safety technology into a foldable helmet.
The ‘packable’ Newlane helmet has already gained traction among urban commuters – especially city bike-hire users – with a unique design that allows it to pack down, making it easy to carry around in a bag.
Now, the company, which manufactures in Birmingham, is entering a new phase of innovation – developing a version that incorporates Mips (Multi-directional Impact Protection System).
Of the news, Newlane Co-Founder Dom Cotton comments: “We’ve spent six years refining and safety testing our helmet, and it already meets rigorous certification standards. Integrating Mips takes our product to the next level in terms of safety, credibility and consumer trust. We’re thrilled to be leading the way as the first folding helmet brand to adopt their world-renowned technology.”
A world first two years in the making
After an initial meeting two years ago, Newlane began working with Swedish-based Mips in mid-2024. Subsequent development, prototyping and testing has produced very promising results and it now looks highly likely that Newlane’s two-part design will be able to accommodate Mips.
The safety system, intended to help reduce the risk of brain injury, consists of a low friction layer mounted inside the helmet which, in a crash, is designed to move slightly, redirecting forces away from the head.
Global market recognition
Currently, over 150 helmet manufacturers worldwide integrate Mips technology, including 75 cycling brands – among them, the biggest names in the industry. Newlane’s addition to this roster marks a significant milestone for both foldable helmets and urban cycling safety.
Newlane expects to have the Mips version of their helmet ready to launch in September this year. For more information visit wearenewlane.com or contact dom@wearenewlane.com
