DT Swiss has brought three new wheelsets to market with each carbon rim offering something different for gravel riders, adventurers, and racers.
At a glance, the GRC 1100 DICUT, GRC 1400 DICUT, and HGC 1400 SPLINE for e-gravel bikes, share three common elements: Weight reduction, achieved via new carbon rims, a “straight out of the mould”, patent-pending, manufacturing process, and a hooked tyre mounting system.
Rims in two depths, and one width
The new rims have two different rim heights – 30mm and 50mm – adapted to deliver for different riding environments and offer specific riding advantages.
The common element is an internal width – measuring 24 mm – which, the brand reports, was proven during the development phase to provide the lowest aerodynamic drag while providing ideal support for 40 mm wide gravel tyres.
- GR 50 (700c only) race-focused rims are 50mm deep and speed-focused. DT Swiss emphasises that, whilst speed-focused, the new rim shape provides a great compromise between aerodynamic performance and robustness,
- GR30 (650B or 700c) is 30mm deep and more focused on adventure rider needs.
The brand provides the following weights based on rim depth: GRC 1100 DICUT (1350 g / 1567 g), GRC 1400 DICUT (1421 g / 1631 g)
Hubs make a difference
The GRC 1100 features the brand’s 180 DICUT hub, with the 36T Ratchet EXP System, and ceramic bearings, whilst the GRC 1400 sports tried and trusted 240 DICUT hubs, with the same 36T Ratchet EXP System, but without the ceramic bearings.
Connecting hubs and rims are DT aerolite II, and DT aero comp II, spokes respectively, with both sporting DT Pro Lock aluminium nipples (hidden on the GRC 1100, for optimal aero performance).
E-bike specific options
HGC 1400 SPLINE is designed specifically to meet the needs of e-bike riders. Nothing makes this more clear than the impressive 140 kg maximum system weight.
This is achieved via a combination of rim, hub and spoke choices, combined to give a ride which delivers for riders using e-bikes, and those wanting to lug kit on adventures. The 30mm deep carbon rim is laced to a DT240 straight-pull hub with Ratchet EXP OS with DT aero comp hybrid straight-pull spokes.
